The Super Bowl is a time to embrace football, food, family…and advertising? Super bowl Sunday is one of the most significant days of the year for American advertisers. The Super Bowl campaigns of 2014 are utilizing social media to its fullest extent. Social media outlets are massive, free, and have the opportunity of reaching millions.

Conversation and chatter are very important for the overall power of a campaign. Having your company’s campaign go viral is the ultimate dream these days. All of the talk of a campaign leads to attention, and attention can lead to a successful campaign. The marketers of Budweiser know this, and with the help of some puppies, have made a very successful and popular commercial.

screen shot 2014-02-02 at 12.43.54 pmBoth TiVo and the USA Today Ad Meter named the brand’s heart-tugging “Puppy Love” spot to be the night’s most popular commercial. The “awww” inducing advertisement captures the friendship between an adorable puppy and a classic Clydesdale. Budweiser does not feature their beer in the commercial, but the last few moments of the commercial displays their logo and the hashtag ‘#BestBuds’. I feel that they mixed emotionality and originality in the most clever way. I mean, who doesn’t like puppies? The commercial is on the top of the list in views, shares, likes, and tweets. It has almost 38 million views on YouTube and nearly 500,000 social media shares.

Who knows how long this storylinbudweiser-bestbuds-billboarde could last; Budweiser could bring these two lovable characters back for next year’s Super Bowl. Viewers who enjoyed the ad will be intrigued to see what happens next or as they get older. This was a smart move for Budweiser and it has my vote for being the best Super Bowl featured commercial.
